Brooks Academy of Science and Engineering “BASE” is the district’s flagship school. Since 2006, BASE has been providing an amazing STEM education for students in grades PreK through 12.
Robotics and STEM activities take place daily on the campus at every grade level. A special focus is given to hands-on science activities to inspire curiosity and reinforce the scientific method. At the elementary level, students beginning in third grade travel in cohorts to receive instruction from specialized teachers. Fourth and fifth graders have a separate writing class for both expository and narrative styles. We honor the need for brain breaks so all elementary grades have daily physical education and recess.
At the middle school level, we introduce daily career and technology classes on every grade level. Competitive sports begin in middle school as well: volleyball, basketball, and powerlifting. At the same time, we focus on STEM classes to ensure that our students have the foundation in math and science that they will need to succeed in college and beyond. There are 20 Pre AP classes available to help students excel in their mastery of skills as well.
High school students have a choice of four career tracks for their Personal Graduation Plan: Civil Engineering, Biomedical Science, Computer Engineering, and Arts & Humanities. Additionally, students have the option of taking 10 AP classes for college credit. Electives include Athletics, Spanish, Art, Painting, Drawing, Instrumental Music, Choir, Architectural Engineering, Journalism. High School athletes can compete in volleyball, basketball, wrestling, powerlifting, cross country, softball, and football. In addition to sports, students can compete in a variety of UIL events including content area competitions.
Special programs are thriving at BASE as well. More than 100 students participate in the Gifted and Talented Programs. Services for special education, ESL, 504 plans, speech, and dyslexia are also offered to students who qualify.
